  • Spotlight

As Millikin University junior Katie Kocan was figuring out the focus of what her studies were going to be, she ended up doing something completely unique.

  • Is a B.A. in Theatre right for you?

Are you passionate about more than one aspect of theatre? If you are an all-around theatre maker who doesn’t want to be boxed into one area of expertise and your dream career involves forming or running a theatre company; writing, performing and producing your own works; or making the kind of theatre you wish others were making, then the B.A. in Theatre is right for you.

Do you want the flexibility to pursue a minor or second major such as Criminal Justice, Music, Dance or Business Management, or are you interested in teaching in the arts? The B.A. in Theatre is designed to support your desired path. It allows you to easily pair your theatre degree with another academic interest, gain hands-on experience directing or designing shows at the student-run Pipe Dreams Studio Theatre, and participate in student organizations such as Math Club (improv), Gregory (tap dancing), Burlesque Underground, or Alpha Psi Omega (theatre honors society). Many students also use the flexibility of the B.A. to combine Theatre with Education coursework, preparing for careers as arts educators and mentors to the next generation of artists.

Do you want to use your theatre degree to make a difference socially or politically? Many activist and advocacy organizations need professional storytellers who understand the principles of performance and creative communication. Millikin offers several unique Performance Learning opportunities to help you learn how to apply your theatre skills in activism and advocacy.

Do you want to pursue a graduate degree? A graduate degree in your field is required to teach at the collegiate level. A B.A. in Theatre will best prepare you with the research, writing and academic mentorship you need to pursue a graduate education.

If these statements apply to you, the B.A. in Theatre is the right degree program for you. Join us!

    The Millikin Difference

Millikin’s School of Theatre & Dance is nationally recognized for its Performance Learning approach, with every course intentionally designed to reflect professional practice. At Millikin, you won’t just read about theatre — you’ll use your knowledge to create it, critique it and lead with it. Join our Shakespeare Corrected class and bring the Bard’s great works to underserved communities or become a part of our student-run theatre to mount your own shows. In classrooms, studios and public spaces, practice the kind of thoughtful, collaborative artistry that transforms audiences and advances the field.

Our B.A. students devise original work, direct plays, collaborate across disciplines and bring theory to life in rehearsal rooms and communities. Whether it’s staging contemporary work, reimagining classics or generating new material through collective creation, you’ll be applying your learning in real-world settings.

In this program, you’ll examine theatre as a powerful cultural force. B.A. students study dramatic literature, performance history, theory and criticism, while actively creating theatre that speaks to today’s most pressing social and political issues.
