DECATUR, Ill. – Millikin University’s Theta Omicron chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will be holding a Back to School giveaway of backpacks and school supplies on Saturday, August 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the drop-off turnaround located in front of the Center of Theatre and Dance on Millikin’s campus.
The giveaway was made possible by a generous gift from Busey Bank. The supplies are available for members of the Decatur community while supplies last on Saturday.
Senior Theater and Performance Studies major Morwin Coney serves as President of the Theta Omicron Chapter and hopes this project can become a yearly tradition.
“We want to continue establishing Alpha Phi Alpha’s connection with the Decatur community, so we will hold a backpack and school supply giveaway on August 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members of the Theta Omicron chapter will be distributing the backpacks on Saturday,” he said. “Alpha Phi Alpha Faternity Inc.’s motto is male-led scholarship and love for all mankind. So, we pride ourselves on giving back to the community, whether it is the campus or the surrounding community. We pride ourselves on the scholarship aspect of the fraternity, so helping the younger generation with some school supplies is what we love to do. We hope to make this a tradition.”
The Theta Omicron Chapter recently celebrated the chapter’s founding at Millikin. Alpha Phi Alpha became the first intercollegiate Greek-letter organization established for African Americans in 1906, and the Theta Omicron chapter was founded at Millikin on May 4, 1973. Since then, hundreds of students have become members, and about 75 returned to Millikin for the Golden Anniversary on May 5-7, 2023.
