DECATUR, Ill. — Millikin University in Decatur and Eastern Illinois University (EIU) in Charleston have established a new Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) Direct Admit partnership that will create a seamless pathway for qualified EIU graduates to pursue Millikin’s CAATE-accredited MSAT program through the University’s College of Professional Studies.
The partnership strengthens collaboration between the two institutions while expanding opportunities for EIU students to continue their education through Millikin’s graduate program. The agreement guarantees placement opportunities in Millikin’s MSAT program for a minimum of three qualified EIU students each academic cycle, provided they meet the program’s admission requirements, and includes a waived application fee. The agreement also allows for close coordination between institutions, meaning students can plan their path with confidence.

Millikin’s MSAT program equips students with the knowledge and skills to excel in athletic healthcare. There are two routes for admission into the MSAT program: Early Entry and Post-Baccalaureate. Beginning with the Fall 2027 academic year, EIU students who meet the partnerships eligibility criteria — including maintaining a cumulative 3.0 GPA and submitting proof of 25 observation hours with a certified athletic trainer, as well as proof of Current Emergency Cardiac Care certification — will have a direct path to pursue the MSAT degree.
"Millikin University is proud to partner with Eastern Illinois University to expand access to high-quality graduate education in Athletic Training," said Joel Blanco, Director of Millikin’s School of Exercise Science & Sport. "This agreement reflects our shared commitment to student success and to meeting the growing demand for qualified healthcare professionals across central Illinois and beyond. Eastern Illinois University has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence and for preparing students who are ready to succeed at the graduate level. Our MSAT program combines rigorous coursework, immersive clinical experiences, and Millikin’s signature Performance Learning model to prepare graduates to excel on the Board of Certification exam and make an immediate impact in the profession. We look forward to welcoming EIU students and to a long and productive relationship between our two institutions."
“This partnership creates an exciting opportunity for Eastern Illinois University students to build on their undergraduate education and take the next step toward a career in Athletic Training,” added Mark Kattenbraker, Chair of EIU’s Department of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation. “By establishing a clear pathway to graduate study at Millikin, we’re helping students plan for their professional futures while strengthening the collaboration between our institutions. This agreement reflects our shared commitment to preparing knowledgeable, skilled healthcare professionals who can make a meaningful difference in the lives of the individuals and in the central Illinois communities they serve.”
Millikin’s MSAT program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). This accreditation confirms that the program meets rigorous national academic and clinical standards. Graduates are immediately eligible to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) exam.
