DECATUR, Ill. – Millikin University’s Kirkland Fine Arts Center is proud to present comedian, actress, and television writer Janelle James to the community on Saturday, October 14, at 7:30 p.m. James stars in the scene-stealing role of ‘Principal Ava’ in the hit ABC series, “Abbott Elementary.” The show garnered wins for Best Supporting Actress, Comedy from the Hollywood Critics Association and Black Reel Awards, as well as nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award, Golden Globe Award, Critics’ Choice Award, Screen Actors Guild Award and Independent Spirit Award.
James’ latest half-hour stand-up special is featured on Netflix’s “The Stand Ups.” Previously, James has served as both a writer and actor for Showtime’s “Black Monday” and Apple’s animated series, “Central Park.” She has toured with Chris Rock, Amy Schumer and David Cross and took over the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival (now The Janelle James Comedy Festival) in Brooklyn, New York. She was a "New Face" at the Just For Laughs Festival Montreal, named one of The 50 Most Funny People in Brooklyn, and recently featured as one of Variety's Top Ten Comedians to Watch. James’ debut comedy album, Black and Mild, was released on all major streaming networks in 2017 to rave reviews. Her podcast, “You In Danger Gurl,” was listed as one of Spotify's top comedy podcasts for 2020.
Bringing her one-of-a-kind humor to the Kirkland stage on Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m., Janelle James is a powerhouse of incisive commentary and clever wit. She is just the latest in a long line of comedic talent to grace the Kirkland stage. Past visiting comedians include Lily Tomlin, David Letterman, The Second City, Billy Crystal, Phyllis Diller, Wayne Brady and Jay Leno.
“We’re excited to host such an accomplished and hilarious comedian here in Decatur, and we can’t wait to give our community a night of laughter and good times that they won’t soon forget. James’ standup is bone-rattling good and just the ticket for 2023,” says Bryan Diver, Director of Kirkland Fine Arts Center.
Kirkland Fine Arts Center is pleased to offer this star of the stage and screen in a limited-run, one-night-only appearance. To honor the artist’s comedic integrity and freedom, this show is recommended for audiences 18 years and older.
