Shirley was born to Ethel Zylpha Black and Glenn William Black on January 15, 1931 in Washburn, Illinois, but grew up in Kankakee, Illinois. Scotty attended Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, where she joined Delta Delta Delta sorority before embarking on her big adventure as a flight attendant with American Airlines, which brought her to Dallas, Texas.
Scotty met her husband of 49 years, Urban Henry Anslinger, in Dallas where they shared mutual friends. Being best friends, they spent a lifetime of devotion to each other, enjoying traveling, cooking, reading, gardening, friends, dogs, and family. Scotty never lost her love of travel, and she traveled all over the world with her husband, Urban, and with her children as well.
In 1955, Scotty and Urban moved to Corpus Christi where she was blessed with many dear friends with whom she could lean on and celebrate. Scotty was a devoted Catholic who was a member of St. Pius X Church and later St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, where she was active in the Daughter’s Organization. Scotty was also involved in a number of other organizations including American Airlines Kiwi Sorority for retired flight attendants, Art Jamboree of South Texas, Palmer Drug Abuse Board of Directors, and the Spohn Hospital volunteers. Upon Urban’s passing in 2003, Scotty moved to Houston where she became an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church as well as a volunteer at Memorial City Hospital.
