DECATUR, Ill. – As Millikin University continues its 125th anniversary celebration, two new street signs now help mark the University's presence within one of Decatur's most historic neighborhoods.
Recently installed at the intersections of Fairview Avenue and Main Street, and Oakland Avenue and Main Street, the signs were generously donated through a partnership between History of the Heartland and the City of Decatur. The signs serve as a visible reminder of Millikin's longstanding connection to the community and its role in shaping Decatur's history since its founding in 1901.
"We see this as a great neighborhood pride project," said Ayn Owens, founder of History of the Heartland. "Millikin is a 125-year-old gem nestled in our historic district."
History of the Heartland is a Decatur-based nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the city's historic structures, neighborhoods, and local heritage. Through educational programs, preservation efforts, digital archives, and community events, the organization helps connect residents and visitors with the stories that have shaped Macon County for generations.
The installation of the new signs comes during Millikin's yearlong 125th anniversary celebration, which honors the University's legacy of academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement. Throughout 2026, Millikin has been recognizing key moments in its history while looking ahead to its future through special events, campus initiatives, and community partnerships.
In addition to the new street signs, commemorative 125th anniversary banners now line portions of the campus, further highlighting this milestone year.
