DECATUR, Ill. – The 66th annual Vespers choral celebration filled the halls of the Kirkland Fine Arts Center on December 6 and 7 as Millikin University students, alumni, and community members gathered for one of the University’s most cherished holiday traditions.

Rooted in reflection, unity, and hope, the 2025 Vespers program centered on one of humanity’s most enduring desires: peace.

“The quest for peace is as old as humanity itself,” said Dr. Benjamin Hawkinson, Director of Choral Activities at Millikin. “Circular seasons of discord have worn down our ability to rest and breathe deeply. So begins the musical journey in wordless longing with 'O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.’”

Today’s Vespers tradition began in 1959, though its roots trace back to 1921 when Millikin faculty first organized a simple holiday concert for students. Over time, the gathering evolved into a signature holiday event. More than 200 student musicians performed in the 2025 program, representing multiple vocal and instrumental ensembles. The performances followed an emotional journey from longing to hope to unity.

“Out of the quiet stillness come the midnight pangs of anxiety that lead us to our ancient plea: ‘Kyrie Eleison’ — Lord, have mercy,” Hawkinson said. “This cry for assistance is among the oldest in continuous use, yet remains as urgent and relatable as ever.”

The program also highlighted musical connections that stretched across cultures and continents.

“The ancient chant ‘Puer Natus in Bethlehem’ found resonance in the American Shape Note tradition of Appalachia,” Hawkinson said. “‘Carol of the Bells’ bridged English and traditional Ukrainian texts, intertwining musical lineages that stretched across continents. Across the ages and over great distances, the outward expressions may differ, but our most deeply held hopes and desires are the same.”

For students, the December performances marked an unforgettable experience centered on collaboration and expression. For alumni and community members, Vespers once again served as a beloved seasonal tradition, signaling the start of the holiday season.
