DECATUR, Ill. — Millikin University is expanding access to its highly regarded teacher preparation programs with the launch of a new accelerated Online Elementary Education Program, designed specifically for working professionals, transfer students and other non-traditional learners seeking flexibility while earning their teaching degree or licensure.

Offered through Millikin’s College of Professional Studies and School of Education, the program provides a flexible, asynchronous online format that allows students to complete coursework on a schedule that fits their professional and personal commitments. Teaching-methods courses are delivered in accelerated eight-week sessions, while required internships provide hands-on classroom experience through field placements in classrooms for grades 1–6.

The program offers multiple pathways to becoming a licensed elementary teacher in Illinois. Students who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another field may pursue a Licensure-Only track, allowing them to move quickly into the classroom, while students without a previous degree can complete a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and earn licensure simultaneously.

“This new online pathway expands Millikin’s commitment to preparing outstanding educators while meeting the needs of today’s diverse learners,” said Dr. Andrew Smith, Dean of the College of Professional Studies at Millikin. “By offering a flexible and accelerated format, we are creating new opportunities for working adults, transfer students, and career changers to pursue teaching and make a meaningful impact in classrooms across Illinois.”

Millikin’s Elementary Education program has earned an “Exemplary” rating from the Illinois State Board of Education for five consecutive years, reflecting its strong emphasis on hands-on learning, close faculty mentorship and classroom readiness.

In addition to obtaining elementary education licensure upon completion of all program and state requirements, students may also choose to add additional licensure areas to their teaching credentials. Licensure areas such as English as a Second Language (ESL) or Special Education (LBS1) are popular options for elementary education majors, depending on their academic plans and career goals.
