E. Doyle Slifer, Jr., Class of 1950

E. Doyle Slifer, Sr. MD, PhD, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on July 21, 2023, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by loved ones.

When he was 17, Doyle enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a medic, serving in the Pacific and aiding wounded soldiers. Utilizing the G.I. Bill, he obtained his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois and later became the laboratory director at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Doyle eventually attended medical school at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica.

As a physician, he was devoted to providing quality care, serving his community in hospitals in Pana and Taylorville, Illinois. Additionally, he contributed to his community as an alderman for the City of Taylorville for many years. Doyle was also known for his generous spirit, always willing to help family, friends, and often strangers.
