Al was born on January 31, 1927 to Edward L. and Ada (Banes) Dammann on the family farm in Hillsboro, Illinois. He married Carolyn A. Frink on September 30, 1951 in East St. Louis, Illinois and they have celebrated over 71 years of marriage and she survives.
Al served in the Navy from 1945- 1946 and from 1950-1952 in Guam. Al graduated from Millikin University with a degree in Business Administration. He owned and operated the Ben Franklin Store on Main Street for 25 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Anna.
