He currently lives in Chicago, IL, with his wife, Sarah, where he freelances in various settings with groups ranging from New Orleans-style brass bands and big bands to chamber groups and symphony orchestras. In addition to his freelance work, Ryan recently joined the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra after winning the position of Principal Trombone. On a national scale, Ryan has performed and toured with such varied artists as Diplo and Major Lazer, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, and Lorie Line and Her Fab Five, as well as at such varied venues as the Vans Warped Tour, the Big Sky Classical Musical Festival, and the Whitehall Chamber Music Festival. As a recording artist, Ryan can be heard on numerous albums of big band jazz as well as in projects with groups such as neo-soul group Nooky Jones, the McNasty Brass Band, and the ska group, the Wicked Bees. In 2014, Ryan was selected as a finalist in the International Trombone Association’s Carl Fontana Competition; in 2012, he received honorable mention in the Kai Winding Competition.

Presenting to a wide variety of audiences, Ryan has given clinics and masterclasses at such venues as the Colburn School, the New World School of the Arts, and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. Additionally, Ryan’s private studio constitutes over twenty low brass students, many of whom can be found in some of the top band programs, youth orchestras, and honor bands in the state of Illinois.
Ryan graduated with a B.M. in Trombone Performance from the University of Minnesota, and is an Endorsing Artist/Clinician for both Conn-Selmer Instruments and Denis Wick Mouthpieces and Mutes.
