Off-Campus Living

This page is designed to assist the Millikin student who has been approved to live off campus.

Students granted permission to live off campus are primarily seniors, but visitors to this page may also include:

  • Commuter students (students who live with their relatives in the local communities)
  • Students over the age of 24
  • Married students or students with dependents
  • Students who are unable to afford on-campus housing
  • Students who are of senior standing (88 credits or more) and are beginning their 7th semester at Millikin

There is a lot to think about when you make the decision to live off campus. Up to this point you have most likely lived on campus where there have been University staff and other students to assist you when problems arise. You have most likely also had a meal plan. Now you will be faced with negotiating a lease, budgeting, preparing your own meals, doing your own cleaning, and traveling to and from campus.

Our University Residency Policy is designed for senior students to take this leap into autonomy. We want to be here to help you with this transition. Please do not hesitate to maintain a relationship with Residence Life, even when you move off campus. We are happy to talk to any off-campus student: give advice, and point you in the right direction to be a successful off-campus resident!

Students wanting to apply to live off campus must email campuslife@millikin.edu for the petition link.

A note about conduct off-campus:
Students who live off-campus are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the Millikin University Student Handbook and the Code of Conduct. Violations of University policy, whether on or off-campus,will be met with disciplinary action. The Office of Campus Life follows a simple "three strikes" policy for off-campus students. If the University fields 3 or more complaints regarding an off-campus student and/or their address, off-campus approval will be revoked and each individual will be responsible for payment of the off-campus living fee. We encourage off-campus residents to be aware of their role as a neighbor in the Decatur community and to respect the privilege of living within that community. We caution students about engaging in activities or hosting events that may endanger themselves or their peers. We expect all Millikin students to conduct themselves with integrity and appropriateness.
