This is a twelve-month administrative position reporting to the Director for Athletics. Working as Head Swimming and Diving Coach, this position provides leadership for the day-to-day as well as the strategic development of the men’s and women’s swim and diving teams. This position serves as a University representative charged with assisting with the recruitment and enrollment of undergraduate and graduate students. Individuals must have the ability to work independently to achieve institutional and divisional goals and objectives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the 

following:  

  1. Lead all recruiting efforts for the men's and women's swimming and diving programs, developing, and executing a comprehensive year-round recruiting plan designed to attract, enroll, and retain academically and athletically qualified student athletes. Establish and maintain strong relationships with high school, club, YMCA, and community college coaches while serving as an ambassador for Millikin University. 
  2. Create and sustain a positive, inclusive, and accountable team culture that promotes student-athlete well-being, personal growth, academic achievement, commitment, and competitive excellence. 
  3. Provide leadership for the retention and development of student-athletes by fostering meaningful relationships, maintaining consistent communication, and creating an environment in which student-athletes feel supported, challenged, and connected to the University community. 
  4. Organize and manage all aspects of the swimming and diving program, including practice planning, competition preparation, travel coordination, roster management, scheduling, communication, equipment oversight, and other day-to-day operational responsibilities. 
  5. Monitor and promote academic success by establishing clear expectations for academic performance, working collaboratively with Student Success staff, and providing appropriate support and accountability for student-athletes. 
  6. Coach and teach the technical skills, training principles, and competitive strategies necessary for individual and team success. 
  7. Conduct camps, clinics, recruiting events, and community outreach activities that promote Millikin University and support the growth and visibility of the swimming and diving program. 
  8. Demonstrate strong administrative and organizational skills through effective budget management, timely completion of required reports, roster management, compliance responsibilities, and fundraising initiatives that support program needs. 
  9. Work collaboratively with admissions, academic support services, athletic department staff, YMCA personnel, alumni, parents, and other campus and community partners to advance the goals of the program and University. 
  10. Build and maintain positive relationships with media, alumni, donors, friends of the University, and external partners to enhance program visibility and engagement. 
  11. Comply with all applicable Millikin University, CCIW, and NCAA rules, regulations, and policies. 
  12. Serve as Athletic Facility Monitor. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. 

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to succeed in a result-driven professional organization. Maintaining professional performance, demeanor, team-approach and focus on results while working under pressure in a dynamic environment. Customer, budget, quality, and delivery conscious mindset. Ability to establish priorities, work independently with minimal supervision and facilitate teamwork. Highly organized, with the ability to plan, execute and multitask to meet deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail. 

Minimum Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Three to five years of successful coaching and recruiting experience preferred.
  • Exemplary Coaching experience marked with not only winning success but also producing academically successful student athletes.
  • Proven ability to recruit and retain quality student-athletes.
  • Well-developed administrative skills, including day-to-day operations and budget management.
  • Exceptional communication skills required. 
  • A thorough understanding and commitment to the NCAA Division III rules, regulations, and philosophy.

  • Proven success recruiting and retaining academically and athletically qualified student-athletes.
  • Demonstrated ability to build a positive team culture characterized by accountability, engagement, student-athlete development, and competitive success.
  • Evidence of supporting student-athlete academic performance, retention, and overall student-athlete experience.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills, including practice planning, communication, scheduling, budget management, and program oversight.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build productive relationships with student-athletes, families, coaches, alumni, and campus partners.
  • Commitment to the NCAA Division III philosophy and the holistic development of student-athletes.
  • Experience developing and implementing strategic recruiting plans and managing recruiting and databases.
