The Head Men’s Basketball Coach will have overall responsibility to develop and operate a competitive intercollegiate program by recruiting, retaining, teaching and mentoring quality student-athletes in the program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the
following:
1. Recruit and retain athletically skilled and academically qualified student-athletes into the men’s basketball program.
2. Oversee the men’s basketball budget.
3. Develop and implement modern and effective basketball techniques and strategies through practice and competition.
4. Arrange transportation and practices schedules in context of department guidelines, working with appropriate departmental and institutional personnel.
5. Establish and maintain effective relationships with local media, high school coaches, the Decatur community, and the extended Millikin University community to promote the men’s basketball program in a positive manner.
6. Comply with all applicable Millikin University, CCIW and NCAA rules, regulations, and policies.
7. Develop a competitive season schedule of non-conference games within the NCAA Division III philosophy.
8. Attend all departmental, conference and other professional meetings.
9. Perform a second duty as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
10. Serve on institutional committees and task forces as assigned.
11. Serve as Griswold Gym Supervisor.
12. Serve as Athletic Facility Monitor.
13. Serve as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Instructor for the Athletic Department as assigned.
14. Performs other job-related duties as may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises others. Fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the university’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training staff members, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining staff members; and addressing complaints and resolving issues.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to succeed in a result-driven professional organization. Maintaining professional performance, demeanor, team-approach and focus on results while working under pressure in a dynamic environment. Customer, budget, quality, and delivery conscious mindset. Ability to establish priorities, work independently with minimal supervision and facilitate teamwork. Highly organized, with the ability to plan, execute and multitask to meet deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail.
Minimum Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Five years of college coaching or equivalent
- Extensive knowledge of the sport of basketball
- Ability to recruit and retain quality men’s basketball student-athletes.
- Excellent organization, interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively to various audiences.
- Ability and willingness to work effectively in a team atmosphere in the Athletic Department
- Strong commitment to the University and NCAA Division III philosophy
- Demonstrated commitment to the academic and athletic success of the student-athlete.
