The Director of Tennis is a twelve-month salaried position, reporting to the Vice President for Athletics and Community Engagement. The Director is responsible for coaching and the direct management and oversight of the NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Tennis Program. The Director should provide leadership as well as serve as a role model to student athletes.  This includes training, development, and recruiting of student-athletes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  1. Ability to recruit and retain quality student athletes.
  2. Successfully create a positive team environment where student-athletes can learn vital life skills through sport.
  3. Develop, maintain, and elevate competitive varsity teams.
  4. Follow all Millikin University, CCIW and NCAA rules and policies.
  5. Coaching/teaching skills and tactics necessary for a successful tennis program.
  6. Ability to positively interact with media, alumni and friends of the University.
  7. Serve as Athletic Facility Monitor, specifically collaborating with Decatur Park District for the Tennis Facility at Fairview Park.
  8. Conduct camps and clinics to promote the University and the men’s and women’s tennis program.
  9. Adhere to fiscal responsibility related to institutional budget and fundraising.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES   

Directly supervises others. Fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the university’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training staff members, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining staff members; and addressing complaints and resolving issues. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to succeed in a result-driven professional organization. Maintaining professional performance, demeanor, team-approach and focus on results while working under pressure in a dynamic environment. Ability to establish priorities, work independently with minimal supervision, and facilitate teamwork. Highly organized, with the ability to plan, execute and multitask to meet deadlines. Must have a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.  

Education and/or Experience 

Required: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred)
  • Experience as a player and/or coach in the sport(s) of Men’s and/or Women’s Tennis
