Musical Theatre Intensive is for high school students focusing on developing skills to be a successful musical theatre performer. The Intensive workshop includes song preparation, scene analysis, acting a song, audition preparation, character development, resume building, Zoom meetings with Millikin alumni, as well as individual coaching on songs and scenes. Led by Millikin University School of Theatre and Dance faculty, the Intensive workshop culminates in a final performance for family and friends on June 7 at 7:00 p.m.

Millikin Children’s Choir: Summer Sings!

June 6-10 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Ages: Students entering grades K-6

Summer Sings! Around the World in 5 Days engages students in singing, dancing, and playing instruments and culminates in a performance on the final day of camp. Those in K-2 will learn games and dances from around the world and those in grades 3-6 grade will choose an elective musical activity as all campers prepare to perform a final concert. No prior experience necessary! Tuition includes a t-shirt and a daily snack.

Preschool Sings!

Ages: Children 3-5

Preschool Sings campers will enjoy singing, dancing, playing, and learning. All activities are age-appropriate and allow for time to create, explore instruments and much more! All participants must be potty trained. Tuition includes t-shirt and a daily snack.

Concert Band Camp (*Canceled)

Ages: High school students

Join fellow wind, brass and percussion musicians for a dynamic week of music making and camaraderie! This enjoyable AND educational camp is designed for high school band students interested in improving their instrumental skills, rehearsing and performing great music, and collaborating with musical peers from other schools. Participants will enjoy full ensemble rehearsals, sectionals, faculty artists, snack breaks, conversations and an inspiring Finale Concert. Music, t-shirt and snacks are included. Will's Desktop Music Camp

June 6-10 from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Ages: 8-14

Music Camp will introduce students to the creation of songs and music, recording and sound mixing, and desktop production techniques. Students will showcase their music creations for fans and family on June 10 at 5:30 pm. Formal music training not required.

DIY Audio Recording Workshops

Enjoy a total of 6 sessions that introduce students to sound mixing, creating songs and music, producing recordings, analyzing production techniques and integrating music technology workflows in the music-making process. Piano Camp!

June 12-18 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Millikin University’s School of Music is pleased to offer its 7th Summer Piano Camp in conjunction with its inaugural Millikin Piano Competition for students in grade 5 and up (including adult students). Over the course of six days, intermediate to advanced students will have the opportunity to refine their skills at our all-Steinway school under the guidance of Dr. Pei-I Wang and Dr. Chung-Ha Kim. Activities include masterclasses, private lessons, pedagogical presentations, collaborative piano, piano competitions, and faculty and student recitals. The Millikin Piano Competition includes Junior, Senior, Piano Ensemble and Concerto categories. Participants will have opportunities to compete for competition awards and $1,000 Millikin scholarships. Creative Writing Camp

June 12-18 from 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Ages: 12+ (Junior high and high school students)
Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Creative Writing Camp is a summer writing program for writers 12 and older. To develop their technique, campers will participate in writing exercises, readings, discussions, group writing workshops and one-on-one critiques with the instructor. They will research and identify their own models for the type of writing they want to do. They will learn layout and design strategies and will work in a vintage 19th century letterpress print shop. By the program’s end, students will have written and revised new work, designed a short pamphlet and they will present their work in an ensemble reading.

Junior Band Concert Camp

Ages: For students up to 8th grade who have played a band instrument for 2 or more years.

The Junior Band Concert Camp is an immersive experience for young band musicians to meet, play, and perform with other talented students from the Decatur area. The program will be led by experienced faculty from the Millikin University School of Music and include rehearsals, group lessons, guest performers, masterclasses, and a final concert on June 17th. The goal is to have fun with other like-minded students while building independent musical skills. T-shirt and snacks will be included.

Jump Start Band Camp

Ages: For students who have played a band instrument for one year.

The Jump Start Band program is for students who are just getting their start playing a band instrument. It will include individualized instruction from Millikin teachers using musical activities designed to help students understand their instrument and make great music right away. Students will build a strong foundation on their instrument that will help them as they continue to develop their musicianship in the future. Students will get a chance to share what they’ve learned at a final performance on June 17th. T-shirt and snacks will be included.

Active Arts Adventure!

Orff the Record!

Students will explore the art of composition and improvisation using traditional classroom instruments, such as xylophones, drums and bells. Students will work cooperatively to create compositions inspired by literature in addition to learning several arrangements. Tuition includes a t-shirt and daily snack.

Summer Jazz Workshop

July 11-15 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Ages: High school students

This Jazz Workshop is designed with the aspiring creative jazz musician in mind! Participants will enjoy a big band experience along with improvisation study, sectional work, individual instrument master classes, ensemble interaction and performance opportunity. The workshop will assist participants in becoming more familiar with the stylistic tendencies and common performance practices in jazz. The workshop is led by Millikin faculty and alumni. Performance is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on July 16. The fee includes masterclass lessons, music, t-shirt and snacks. The following will be accepted: Saxes (2-3 altos, 2-3 tenors, 1 baritone); Trumpets (4-6); Trombones (4-6); Rhythm (1-2 guitar, 1-2 basses, 2 piano, 2-3 drummers).

Rap U!

Ages: Students entering grades 5-12

Back by popular demand! Create hip hop music, learn skills and study the culture! This course, taught by teacher/producer/signed artist Kaream Williams (TaQsem), explores the history of hip hop with a focus on beat making, rapping, social justice and art. Students will create music to express themselves and will participate in a performance for family and friends on July 15 at 5:30 p.m. Previous musical experience not required.

First Gig Rock n Roll Camp!

July 18-22 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Ages: Students entering grades 5-12

Compose, produce and perform like a rock star! Led by Mike Schoneman, Braun Sheets and other seasoned professional musicians, students will learn the ropes of being a Rock Star. Students will participate in daily private lessons in their area (guitar, bass, drums, vocals) and will also be assigned to a band that will prepare for a performance while also creating a cd, and learning how to market themselves with logo/t-shirt, etc. Program culminates in a Rock Concert on Saturday, July 23.

Millitrax Playhouse Summer Music Industry Series Summer Camp

Have you ever wondered what the music production chain is all about? How you might develop your skill set to make yourself an able collaborator, industry professional or a self-sustaining independent artist? Then the 2022 Millitrax Playhouse is for you! The Millitrax Playhouse is a fast-paced, invigorating one-week camp that provides learning opportunities with songwriting, performing, recording engineering, music production and music business. The Playhouse experience is built on Millikin University’s Music Industry Studies curriculum and takes place in our Millitrax recording studios – a professional recording studio facility and your own personal playhouse for a week! You will be coached by Music Industry Studies faculty, alumni and current students. Come see if Millikin University is the right place for you to launch your music career.

 


 

Violin and Viola Masterclass Intensive

Ages: High School Students

MCAA Violin and Viola Masterclass Intensive is designed for the high school student who would like to learn from an award-winning violinist! Participants will enjoy individual lessons along with master classes, ensemble interaction and performance opportunity through chamber music. The Intensive will be taught in a masterclass style guiding players to improve their skills as they become better musicians. Musicians should have at least 2 years of experience on their instrument. Observers are welcome to attend and learn for a daily fee. Fee includes music, t-shirt, lessons, and performance opportunities.

Summer Strings Camp

July 25-29 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (July 29: Performance Time TBD)

Ages: Students up to 8th grade who have played a string instrument for at least one year

Summer Strings Camp is for students entering 4th-8th grades and is designed for string players interested in improving their instrumental skills and collaborating with musical peers. Students will join fellow viola, violin, cello, and upright bass musicians for a dynamic week of music making and camaraderie! The program will be led by award winning Millikin Faculty member Ion-Alex Malaimare and assisted by DPS teacher Jennifer Meyer. The camp will include rehearsals, group lessons, technique focus, musical games and a final concert on July 29th. The goal is to have fun with other like-minded students while building independent musical skills. Music, T-shirt and snacks will be included. Students will need to supply their own instruments and bow. Participants are asked to supply a current video of themselves playing (2021-22 School Year) so directors can assign students into ensembles prior to camp starting. Please feel free to record any piece you enjoy playing, regardless of length. For format, please send YouTube link. Please submit with registration by June 27, 2022.
