DECATUR, Ill. – Millikin University welcomed some of the best and brightest young science minds from across Illinois when the Illinois Junior Academy of Science (IJAS) held its annual State Exposition on campus on Friday and Saturday, May 3-4, 2024.

IJAS Symposium

Middle school and high school students from every region of the State took part and presented their scientific posters and papers in a variety of categories to teams of judges. Students had to design an experiment to investigate a question or problem and could present it as a paper and/or a poster.

Events began on Friday with the judging of student papers at the Decatur Indoor Sports Center (DISC), and the evening concluded with a banquet dinner.

On Saturday, presentations took center stage in the main gymnasium at the DISC as students answered questions about their research to judges grading their work. Judges tabulated the results and awarded the winners to conclude the expo.

About the IJAS

The Illinois Junior Academy of Science exists for the benefit of students in Illinois by guiding them and hosting several science fairs throughout Illinois, culminating with the State Exposition. The process students follow when participating gives them insights into the problems faced by scientists and the methodologies scientists use. It encourages students to find information concerning new investigations and discoveries in science. It allows students to get experience with scientific equipment while also allowing them to develop their own investigation beyond the classroom and progress toward a career in STEM.
