The Untold Stories Committee, in partnership with the Heart of Illinois Community Foundation, will unveil the fourth marker on the Macon County African American Heritage Trail.
Located at Millikin University outside the University Commons, the marker acknowledges the experiences, contributions, and legacy of Black students and alumni at Millikin. From the University’s founding in 1901 through the Civil Rights and Black Liberation movements of the 1960s and 1970s, Black students have played an important role in shaping the Millikin community and advocating for greater inclusion, representation, and belonging on campus.
The Macon County African American Heritage Trail celebrates the untold stories and remarkable contributions of African Americans who have shaped our community. Featuring historical markers, murals, and other points of heritage throughout Macon County, the trail highlights stories of resilience, achievement, and community building that have shaped the region for generations.
The community is invited to attend the unveiling and learn more about this important chapter in Millikin’s history.
