movie posterThis week, the School of Mathematics and Computational Sciences is hosting a viewing party for the recently released documentary Journeys of Black Mathematicians: Forging Resilience. According to its website https://zalafilms.com/jbm/#, this film project “examines some of the history that has prevented African Americans from the pursuit of studies and careers in science and mathematics. Black mathematicians have continued to face barriers in a world that is only now grudgingly coming to terms with a legacy of inequality and prejudice. The stories of our characters offer a wide range of examples.” A trailer for the film can be viewed at the link above.

This film is designed for the general public, so while it will focus on mathematicians, the issues of diversity, prejudice, and racism are of interest to all academic areas.

Feel free to spread the word among your classes to come to the event!

We are able to host this film for free and provide light snacks thanks to donations from generous alumni of SoMCS. I’ll have a sign in sheet in case you’d like to offer extra credit for your students who attend. Join us in the UC Ballrooms on Thurs, Feb 22 from 4-5pm to view the documentary!
