Shaping Lives of Meaning and Value

We want to assist first year students with a personal life of meaning and value through exploring basic components of leadership development. This phase of the program will also provide new students the opportunity to build a support network of faculty, staff, and peers who can facilitate their personal and professional growth while at Millikin.

First Year Students

We assist first year students with a personal life of meaning and value through exploring basic components of leadership development. This phase of the program will also provide new students the opportunity to build a support network of faculty, staff, and peers who can facilitate their personal and professional growth while at Millikin.

  • Develop and utilize a personal mission statement to set priorities in their lives while at Millikin and beyond.
  • Improve in their ability to manage time effectively.
  • Seek out opportunities to volunteer and serve.
  • Develop habits to improve their overall health and wellness.
  • Respectfully listen to and consider other points of view.

Second Year Students

We provide second year students with the opportunity to further explore theoretical concepts associated with leadership development and to continue to develop their own definitions of and beliefs about leadership. These students begin to explore democratic citizenship by serving in leadership positions through student engagement opportunities.

  • Give selflessly of their time and talents to serve others, thereby, creating an understanding of the needs of others through their service.
  • Feel more connected with the Millikin community.
  • Demonstrate personal responsibility and be proactive in participating in volunteer opportunities.
  • Differentiate between individual difference, culture difference, and university similarities.
  • Engage in healthy lifestyle choices.

Third Year Students

We immerse third year students in more intense experiential opportunities and deeper theoretical discussions about leadership beliefs and practices in order to enhance their professional success. Experienced leaders will focus specifically on concepts such as strategic change, social justice, and resolving complex ethical dilemmas. They are also prepared to share their knowledge and experiences with other students in facilitating, training, and mentoring roles.

  • Develop in their ability to challenge processes; empower and encourage others; and model appropriate values.
  • Receive feedback from others regarding their abilities as a leader.
  • Engage and develop service learning opportunities.
  • Embrace difference and inclusion while seeking opportunities to address inconsistencies.
  • Achieve balance between education, work, and leisure time.

Fourth Year Students

Finally, our fourth year students continue to hone their skills by facilitating leadership development in other students, working in one-on-one situations with professional mentors and preparing to utilize their skills in diverse work environments. These students have an in-depth understanding of themselves, their relationships, and their place in the world around them. As a result, they are intensely committed to their professional success, being a democratic citizen in a global environment and having a personal life of meaning and value.

  • Be able to reflect critically on their leadership journey.
  • Demonstrate integrity while making appropriate decisions regarding behavior; recognize and accept consequences of their actions; and act in a dependable manner.
  • Recognize individual and group contributions, celebrate accomplishments, and encourage others to act and make decisions.
  • Use knowledge of similarities and differences between people to make sensitive, ethical and appropriate decisions.
  • Exhibit behaviors that advance a healthy community.
