The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords eligible students certain rights with respect to their education records. An eligible student is a student who is 18 years of age or older or who attends a postsecondary institution. These rights include:
Be notified of their FERPA rights at least annually
Inspect and review their records (copies are not provided and phones are not allowed to be present)
Request an amendment to an incorrect record
Consent to disclosure of personally identifiable information
File a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education
There are serious obligations under FERPA. This tutorial will help you understand your responsibilities to keep student records private and allow them access to their records. Also available is a quick reference guide.
