This position serves as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and will manage all operations and development of the program to include individual student-athletes and group/team training for Millikin Athletics
The position involves working directly with sport head coaches and athletic training staff to design and implement training programs to help optimize conditioning, injury prevention, and overall physical and mental wellness. It includes monitoring training sessions and tracking progress.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following: (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions).
- Design and implement strength and conditioning programs in-season, off-season, and pre-season for all varsity athletics programs in accordance with NSCA Strength and Conditioning Professional Standards guidelines.
- Monitor and teach proper techniques for strength and conditioning.
- Reduce the likelihood of sports-related injuries or aggravation of existing injuries during practice sessions and/or scheduled contests.
- Meet Millikin, NCAA, and CCIW regulations and obligations, including operating budget and fiscal responsibilities.
- Evaluate and prioritize weight room strength and cardio equipment needs.
- Train, supervise, and evaluate part-time, interns, and/or volunteer assistants as needed.
- Organize the physical conditioning and development of injury prevention techniques, pre-season preparation of student-athletes, and post-season completion of program administrative duties.
Additional Duties
- Hire, train, and supervise weight room student workers, including managing budget and hours.
- Inspire students regarding their overall success, in the classroom, in athletic endeavors, and as a part of the campus community.
- Promote good sportsmanship.
- Assist with facility and equipment maintenance to ensure a clean, safe, and functional training environment.
- Perform additional departmental administrative duties and responsibilities as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position directly supervises student workers, assistant(s), interns, graduate assistant(s), and/or volunteer(s) as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and/or Experience
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree required (Master’s preferred) in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or a related field.
- Relevant certifications (CSCS from the NSCA, SCCC from the CSCCa, or CSC from the NCSF.
- One to two years of experience programming and supervising student athletes at the college level
- Current standard first aid, CPR, and AED certifications.
- Knowledge of NCAA rules and CCIW policies and procedures.
- Excellent communication skills, including effective verbal and written abilities.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Strong motivation skills.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, and coaches.
- Computer and database skills necessary.
WORK ENVIRONMENT This position serves as a member of the Department of Athletics. Reporting to the Director of Sports Medicine, this position must work effectively on a regular basis with members of the faculty and staff, colleagues in Athletics, Admission, Student Affairs, University Advancement, Physical Plant, Dining Services, and other University offices.
WORKING CONDITIONS Typical working conditions found in most indoor and outdoor athletic scenarios. Flexibility to work an untraditional work schedule. Ability to travel to NCAA and/or CCIW meetings, and/or professional development workshops, as necessary. Occasionally sitting at a desk or table; occasional lifting 25 lbs. or more. Constant standing; hearing and visual acuity within normal range; ability to stoop, kneel, and crouch occasionally; high degree of mobility required. Dexterity to operate a keyboard. Outdoor exposure to all types of weather.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS Communicates effectively and appropriately. Gets along and cooperates with co-workers and appropriately interacts with others. Participates and functions as an effective member of the team.
