Hurst, Texas - Laura Sunkel Mahon, 68, passed away on Sept. 2, 2023, surrounded by her loving family, pastor, and beloved friend of 60 years. She was born on April 7, 1955, in Edinburgh, IN, to the Rev. Dr. Laurence Sunkel (Presbyterian pastor PCUSA) and Margaret (Abbott) Sunkel.
Laura attended Loyola University Chicago, graduating in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in fine arts. She then moved to Texas to pursue her master's degree in fine arts at the University of Texas-Austin, graduating in 1984. She worked in professional theater in Austin as a theater lighting designer from 1984-1992.
After meeting her best friend and mate-for-life, she moved to Hurst and married Jim Mahon. She taught theater as an adjunct professor at Tarrant County College (TCC) Northeast, later promoted Technical Director of the Drama department. She retired in May 2020, after 20 years at TCC. She had many students she helped shepherd and taught. They all called her "Mom."
She had 4 beautiful children; George and Bonnie Olden, and daughters Annabel and Katherine Mahon. Laura loved life, family, church, music, theater, and all animals. Laura's smile was her hallmark and could light up a room. She had many friends thanks to her keen, goofy sense of humor, and a beautiful, kind spirit. She was our family's everything. She will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her loving husband of 30 years, Jim Mahon; son George and daughter-in-law Carrie Olden; daughter Bonnie and son-in-law John Williams; daughters Annabel and Katherine Mahon; and grandchildren Ann Margaret, Eleanor, and Colton.
