Assistant Professor of Stage and Production Management

The Millikin University School of Theatre and Dance is accepting applications for a full-time tenure track position in Stage and Production Management to begin in August 2024.  Millikin is a small, private, comprehensive university of approximately 1800 students located in Decatur, Illinois.  The nationally recognized School of Theatre and Dance is a vibrant and highly visible component of the campus community serving 160 students in five-degree programs including a BA in Theatre and Performance Studies and BFAs in Acting, Design and Production, Musical Theatre, and Stage Management.  The school is housed in a new $29 million facility, the Center for Theatre and Dance, which opened in 2020. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Teach courses in stage management and other areas of expertise
  • Mentor student stage managers and ASMs on mainstage productions; attending production meetings, observing some evening/weekend rehearsals as needed
  • Serve as Production Manager for the School of Theatre & Dance mainstage productions, developing calendar requirements with CFA/Kirkland Fine Arts staff, setting and supporting internal design & production deadlines, coordinating design & production meetings, working with guest artists as needed
  • Facilitate positive communication, problem solving, and coordination across all areas and shops within the School of Theatre & Dance (scenic, props, lighting, sound, costumes, stage management and performance)
  • Attend and lead all designer runs, photo calls, technical rehearsals, and dress rehearsals (evening and weekend hours required during these periods)
  • Work with School of Theatre & Dance Director, staff and faculty to manage the production budget
  • Work closely with Coordinator of Design & Production, Artistic Director, and CFA Production Manager
  • Advise students, faculty and staff on best practices according to AEA guidelines
  • Attend School of Theatre & Dance, College of Fine Arts, and full faculty meetings
  • University and School of Theatre & Dance service

Required qualifications:

  • MFA in Stage Management, Production Management or related field
  • University level teaching experience
  • Demonstrated collaborative stage management experience in university and professional productions
  • Demonstrated collaborative production management experience
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office communication tools such as Teams, Sharepoint, and Outlook

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching diverse student populations
  • AEA Membership, knowledge of current union guidelines
  • Experience in other areas of theatrical design or technology a plus
  • Teaching and collaborative practices related to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
