Celebration of Storytelling

DECATUR, Ill. – Millikin University will host its second annual Celebration of Storytelling Conference on Thursday, March 26, 2026, from 8:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the University Commons. The immersive event invites high school, community college, and current Millikin students to explore writing, publishing, and literature alongside accomplished authors, illustrators and publishing professionals.

The conference is designed to amplify diverse voices while providing students with hands-on experience and insight into the creative industries. Through keynote sessions, interactive lectures, breakout discussions and writing workshops, attendees will strengthen their storytelling skills and gain practical knowledge of today’s evolving literary landscape.

Celebration of Storytelling

“Storytelling isn’t just about grammar or structure,” said Dr. Julie Bates, Associate Professor and Director of the School of Writing, Languages & Cultures at Millikin University. “It’s about helping each student find their voice and feel confident sharing it. This conference gives them a chance to do that while meeting writers and professionals who can offer guidance and encouragement along the way.”

This year’s keynote speaker is Anna Sortino, award-winning author of “Give Me a Sign,” a 2024 Millikin Medal Honoree, “On the Bright Side” and “Stops Along the Way.” Sortino, recognized for centering disabled characters in authentic, heartfelt stories, has earned several national accolades.

The event will also feature a panel of industry leaders, including:

  • -Katy Lipscomb, CEO and co-founder of Katy Lipscomb LLC, an award-winning freelance illustration company with clients including Adidas, Nintendo and Disney
  • -Tyler Fisher, co-founder and operations manager of Katy Lipscomb LLC
  • -Vicky Weber ’15, bestselling children’s book author, literary agent, Millikin alum and founder of At Home Author
  • -Stephen Frech, Millikin professor emeritus, poet and founder/editor of Oneiros Press
  • -Nick Heeb, Author of “The Lucky Clover” and screenwriter for the short film “Rivals”

Together, these presenters represent a wide range of creative pathways, from traditional and self-publishing to illustration, branding and screenwriting.

Throughout the day, students will participate in craft-focused workshops and breakout sessions, receiving individualized feedback and opportunities to engage meaningfully with visiting writers and faculty. Informal conversations during lunch will provide additional networking and mentorship opportunities.

High school and community college students are invited to submit fiction, poetry or creative nonfiction to the Celebration of Storytelling Writing Contest by March 9, 2026. One high school student and one community college student will each receive a $1,000 scholarship to Millikin University, with winners announced during the March 26 conference.

Whether aspiring to publish a novel, illustrate children’s books, pursue screenwriting, or simply strengthen their creative voice, participants will leave the Celebration of Storytelling with practical tools, professional connections, and renewed inspiration. Students are encouraged to register in advance and check their email for additional event details.
