Millikin's Blue Satellite keeps it old style with letterpress

Blue Satellite Press, a Millikin University student-run venture, will be holding an open house on May 1 to celebrate its new space, located at 1113 W. Wood St. in Decatur, Ill. The business will be open to the public from 3 to 5 p.m. every Wednesday through May 13.

As part of the open house, students of Blue Satellite Press will highlight the operation of their 2,700-pound press, manufactured by Chandler & Price in 1909. The press is their largest and was acquired last year from Classic Printing.

Dr. Stephen Frech, Millikin associate professor of English, and Millikin University students formed Blue Satellite Press in 2008 with a mission of printing high-quality letterpress poetry broadsides. Students solicit previously unpublished work from contemporary poets, and then design a broadside that showcases what they admire in the poem. Students learn the aspects of design and print production that letterpress printing encourages.
