A captivating and versatile pianist, Dr. Pei-I Wang is Assistant Professor of Piano and Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. She serves as Principal Keyboardist at the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra and Acting Principal Keyboardist at the Illinois Symphony Orchestra. Wang studied piano under the tutelage of Dr. Ian Hobson, Dr. Rolf-Peter Wille, Dr. Daming Zhu, and accompanying under Prof. Dennis Helmrich.
Dr. Wang performed extensively in music festivals and concerts in the United States, Europe, and Asia, both as a guest artist and a soloist with orchestras. Her orchestra appearances include as soloist with Illinois Symphony Chamber Orchestra, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Sangamon Valley Civic Orchestra, University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra (UIUC), University of Illinois Springfield Band (UIS), and Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Wang has garnered recognition and awards from various competitions, such as the Liszt-Garrison International Piano Competition, the Mauro Paolo Monopoli Prize Asian Auditions, the UIUC Concerto Competition, the 21st Century Piano Commission Competition with composer John Ritz, and the YAMAHA and KAWAI outstanding young musician’s awards. Her name appeared in the “Treasury of Young Talented Musicians” program, sponsored by the Council for Cultural Affairs of Taiwan. She regularly presented recitals of piano solo, duo, and chamber music, collaborating with fellow musicians, and taught masterclasses at several institutions. Most recently, her recording of Carl Czerny’s piano-four-hands fantasies with Dr. Sam Gingher was released in September 2021 under the Naxos label.
Dr. Wang is passionate about the world of collaborative art. She was fortunate to serve as a vocal coach, accompanist, and collaborative pianist/keyboardist for several orchestras, institutions, operas, musicals, and choruses, such as the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra, Springfield Choral Society, Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia da Camera, Gloriana Chamber Choir, Millikin Opera, Blackburn Voice & Choir, UIUC Opera, Illini Women’s Chorus, and Women’s Chorus of Soochow University under the direction of various renowned conductors.
Wang is an enthusiastic educator and an active member of several professional organizations. She is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM) in Piano by MTNA and has served as a frequent clinician, presenter, and adjudicator in conferences, auditions, and competitions (both state and district competitions). Her students, from pre-college to college students have won numerous awards, scholarships, and competitions. Her prior teaching experience at the college level in the United States include Lincoln Land Community College, Blackburn College, and the University of Illinois Springfield. Currently, Dr. Wang serves as the Secretary-Treasurer at the Illinois State Music Teachers Association, Coordinator of the ISMTA Competitions SOUTH, and the President of the Decatur Area Music Teachers Association.
