Originally from Taiwan, pianist Pei-I Wang received international recognition as a laureate in the artist division of the prestigious 2011 Liszt-Garrison International Piano Competition, which was held by American Liszt Society in celebration of Franz Liszt’s bicentennial. Her primary and former piano teachers include Drs. Ian Hobson, Rolf-Peter Wille, and Daming Zhu.
During her studies, Dr. Wang was awarded Yamaha (KHS) and Kawai scholarships for outstanding young musicians in Taiwan, accompanying/opera assistantships and a competitively campus-wide Dissertation Travel Grant from UIUC. Dr. Wang has won many competitions, including the UIUC Concerto Competition, the Ninth Annual 21st Century Piano Commission Competition with composer John Ritz, the Asian Audition of International Piano Competition “Mauro Paolo Monopoli Prize”, and the National Music Competition in Taiwan, and the Liszt-Garrison international Piano Competition, among others. Her name appeared in the “Treasury of Young Talented Musicians” program sponsored by the Council for Cultural Affairs of Taiwan. Dr. Wang has performed extensively in many master classes, music festivals, and concerts in the United States, Europe, and Asia, both as a guest artist and a soloist with orchestras. Her orchestra appearances include the soloist with Illinois Symphony Chamber Orchestra, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Sangamon Valley Civic Orchestra, University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra (UIUC), and University of Illinois Springfield band (UIS). She regularly presented recitals of piano solo and duo and collaborate with fellow musicians at several institutions.
Dr. Wang is passionate about the world of collaborative art and opera. She holds a Master of Music degree in vocal coaching and accompanying under Prof. Dennis Helmrich at UIUC, and was fortunate to work as a vocal coach and rehearsal accompanist in the Opera division led by Maestro Eduardo Diazmuñoz. Since then, she has been involved in many opera/musical productions and choral performances. She has served as a vocal coach, accompanist, and pianist/keyboardist at several institutions and music groups, such as Springfield Choral Society, Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia da Camera, Gloriana Chamber Choir, Millikin Opera, Blackburn Voice & Choir, UIUC Opera, Illini Women’s Chorus, and Women’s Chorus of Soochow University.
Dr. Wang is an enthusiastic educator and an active member of several professional organizations. She is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM) in Piano by MTNA and has served as a frequent adjudicator in auditions and competitions (both state and district competitions). Her prior teaching experiences at the college level in US include Lincoln Land Community College, Blackburn College, and University of Illinois Springfield. Currently, Dr. Wang teaches at Millikin University as an Adjunct Professor of Music and serves as MTNA Junior Competition Coordinator at ISMTA and President of Decatur Area Music Teachers Association.
