School of Education

Dr. Christie Magoulias is the Director of Education and an Associate Professor at Millikin University.  Dr. Magoulias leads the faculty and staff of the School of Education in instruction, accreditation, assessment, community outreach, school partnerships, curriculum, and management of the English Language Center.

While teaching, Dr. Magoulias lays emphasis on student engagement and active learning in her classes.  She has taught courses in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education, specializing in instructional methods and classroom management courses.  Her research background includes the study of the transition from student to teacher and improving teacher retention rates.

Dr. Magoulias is a proud alumnus of Millikin University with a B.S. in Elementary Education. Following her time at Millikin, she worked as an elementary teacher and an Instructional Specialist in the St. Louis area.  During this time, she also earned a M.S. in Educational Administration from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.  She continued her education at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale where she earned a Ph.D. in Educational Administration while serving as Clinical Instructor and Center Coordinator for the university's Teacher Education Program.

Currently, Dr. Magoulias is serving Millikin through the development of Performance Learning as a hallmark of a Millikin education.  She sees the clinical expectations of educator preparation as a cogent example of Performance Learning.  In her specific work on Performance Learning, she served on the Assessment Task Force which was charged with the development of Performance Learning rubrics to assist curricular and co-curricular areas in identifying levels of partnership, engagement, and reflection within Performance Learning projects and plans. She also served on the study group which integrated Performance Learning in university policies and procedures and developed a handbook for Performance Learning.  In her ninth year at Millikin, Dr. Magoulias brings experience with assessment and accreditation to her department and university committees. She serves as the Assessment Coordinator for the School of Education, and constructed and manages the Unit Assessment System for the department.

One of her passions is teaching an Immersion course to students seeking an international teaching experience. To date, Dr. Magoulias has traveled with students twice to Northeast Normal University, our Asian partner school in Changchun, China; twice to the University of Lleida, our European partner school in Lleida, Spain; and twice to the Dominican Republic.

She is married and raising three sons.  Together, they all love reading, soccer, swimming, skiing, camping, hiking trails, rock collecting, and creative adventures!
