Millikin students honor MLK Day with food drive

Student-athletes from the Millikin University men's basketball team and volunteers from Millikin's Office of Student Development honored Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Jan. 18 by collecting non-perishable donations at County Market in Decatur, Ill.

The donations benefited the Northeast Community Fund, an organization that provides several services in the local community including: free food to individuals and families, free clothing room, furniture vouchers to obtain free furniture, bedding items and small appliances. The Northeast Community Fund has helped meet the needs of thousands of families in the local community for over the last 41 years.

The food drive was organized by Tyler McLean, Millikin service and civic engagement coordinator, through AmeriCorps VISTA.

"The event on Jan. 18 went well beyond what we expected, considering it was a holiday, and below zero temperatures," McLean said. "Through our volunteer efforts and with the help of the dedicated associates at County Market, we were able to collect over 330 non-perishable food items for the Northeast Community Fund."

McLean noted, "Millikin is heavily invested in the students' involvement in the community. We partner with the United Way for their annual Day of Action in August and this food drive is something else that we try to do each year. We know after the holidays the food banks' supply is diminished and we want to do what we can to help them out."
