Millikin professor publishes ground-breaking book on university management
Higher education institutions have faced several challenges in recent years such as remaining profitable, growing enrollment, raising funds and remaining relevant. As these issues continue to be significant, what should be the best path for institutions to achieve success?
In his latest book titled "Strategies for University Management" (Business Expert Press, LLC, 2016) Dr. J. Mark Munoz, professor of management and international business at Millikin University, identifies the best practices in university management with insights from university leaders and experts from all over the world. The two-volume book series is co-edited by Dr. Neal King, chairman of the Board of Directors and president emeritus of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP).
The state of contemporary higher education has been described as chaotic, competitive and constrained with institutional roadblocks and bureaucracy. "Strategies for University Management" captures the viewpoints of thought leaders in the contemporary education landscape. The book is positioned to be an official "how to guide" for success in the management of educational institutions.
The authors address the importance of change and the response to change with new academic mindsets and business models. The book identifies a various set of strategic management options that are relevant to academic institutions with specific attention toward the management areas of planning and leading.
According to the authors, "The cornerstone of many academic institutions is the Strategic Plan. The plan that the institution envisions and implements determines success. Planning entails the establishment of goals, as well as the identification of necessary resources. Leadership is equally important since it determines how and when the plans are executed. It also involves collaborating with multiple stakeholders and is a social process."
The first volume of "Strategies for University Management" is organized into four sections that provide tools for academic leaders to transform, reinvigorate and even turn-around educational institutions. The second volume of the book series covers the management topics of effective organizing and controlling.
Dr. Munoz added, "I believe this book can be helpful to leaders in the academe around the world. While internal and external operating conditions vary across institutions, the insights provided by experienced university presidents, consultants and experts provide a clear roadmap for success in university management. In editing this book, Dr. Neal King and I made it a point to be as inclusive as possible. We invited chapter contributors from several countries. We covered as many key management issues as we could. We wanted this book to be truly global in nature, where excellent university strategies from one corner of the world can be applied in other countries."
The authors noted, "In a contemporary world where governments, markets, stakeholders, students, competition and technologies continually evolve and redefine the operational terrain, the university's ability to pick the right strategy and execute it well at the right time is paramount."
