Millikin graduates to be honored at Winter Commencement
Millikin University will honor over 140 graduates during its 2015 Winter Commencement ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m. in Kirkland Fine Arts Center. Graduates from Millikin's traditional undergraduate program, evening degree completion program (PACE), and Master of Science in Nursing program will be honored during the ceremony.
Dr. Edward C. Elliott, M.D., will deliver the commencement address entitled "Three Glasses of Inspiration." The ceremony will feature student speakers Xin "Water" Zhao and John R. Blakeman.
Xin "Water" Zhao is from Zhuhai, China, and now resides near Oreana, Ill. Water is a studio art major and will be graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. The title of her address is "JFK Revisited; Ask not what the Mother Earth can do for you, ask what you can do for the Mother Earth."
John Blakeman is from Taylorville, Ill., and is graduating with a Master of Science in Nursing degree, Nurse Educator track. He is also a clinical nurse on a cardiovascular unit at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Ill. The title of Blakeman's address is "Change."
Dr. Edward C. Elliott is originally from Lexington, Ky., and is board certified in radiation oncology as well as anatomic and clinical pathology. He has spent over 25 years in Decatur and central Illinois helping make Cancer Care Specialists of Central Illinois a regionally and nationally recognized center of excellence in providing exceptional care for cancer patients.
Dr. Elliott received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., and his M.D. degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Lexington, Ky., in 1979. After completing his residency in pathology in 1983, Dr. Elliott remained on the faculty as an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. He simultaneously served as the director of the Northeast Kentucky Area Health Education Center and was a pathologist at St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead, Ky.
In 1986, Dr. Elliott chose to pursue his interest in clinical oncology. He completed his residency in radiation oncology at the University of Kentucky in 1989, and subsequently was in practice in Decatur, Ill. Dr. Elliott also served as president of the Central Illinois Radiological Society and the Macon County Medical Society.
