Koulos named 2015 Lincoln Academy Student Laureate
Millikin University senior accounting major Alexander Koulos, of Naperville, Ill., was named Millikin University's recipient of the Lincoln Academy of Illinois' Student Laureate Award for 2015.
The Lincoln Academy's Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Awards are presented for excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities to seniors from each of the state's four-year, degree-granting colleges and universities, and one student from the community colleges in Illinois.
Koulos was presented with his award during the annual Student Laureate Convocation on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Ill.
"I'm extremely honored to have been chosen by Millikin faculty as this year's Student Laureate," said Koulos. "I've had the privilege of getting to build some great relationships during my four years at Millikin and I'm humbled to know that my hard work has been recognized in a prestigious way."
During the Student Laureate Convocation, each student received a Student Laureate Medallion, along with a $1,000 educational grant and a certificate of achievement. This was the 41st year Lincoln Academy has celebrated students' excellence in Illinois.
A James Millikin Scholar (JMS), Koulos is a recipient of Millikin University's Scovill Award, the most coveted student award for overall excellence at Millikin University. He is also president of Millikin University's Interfraternity Council.
Koulos is captain of the Millikin Men's Golf team and was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America on July 22, 2015. To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar NCAA Division III status an individual must be in his junior or senior season, compete in at least three years of collegiate golf, play in 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 79 and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2.
Koulos has spent the previous two years as a financial analytics intern at British Petroleum (BP) and is on path to earn his undergraduate degree in accounting from Millikin University in May 2016. Koulos has accepted a job offer to begin working with Ernst & Young as an audit associate starting next fall.
"Alex has consistently been a high-performing student," said Dr. J. Mark Munoz, interim dean of the Tabor School of Business at Millikin University. "He is a James Millikin Scholar who excels in his classes. He has demonstrated leadership and professionalism in the classroom and beyond. For example, he did top-rate work during his internship at British Petroleum. He also took an active leadership role in Tau Kappa Epsilon and is captain of the men's golf team."
Dr. Munoz noted, "The Lincoln Academy of Illinois honors students with exceptional academic and leadership abilities. Alex truly deserves this honor."
