For the 19th consecutive year, the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra (MDSO), under the direction of Dr. Michael Luxner, music director and conductor of the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra, provided a free Labor Day concert for the Decatur community on Sept. 7.

The hour-long concert was held at Decatur's Nelson Park Amphitheater. The program comprised of light classical, patriotic, and popular musical arrangements.

The selections in the pops concert were designed to appeal to a wide range of tastes, from the section of the "William Tell Overture" to the variations from the "Appalachian Ballet," a piece that lasts 22 minutes.

The Labor Day concert was a preview of the upcoming MDSO season, which kicks off on Sept. 26. The program will feature Mahler's "Symphony No. 4," Bloch's "Concerto Grosso No. 1" and Janacek's "On an Overgrown Path."
