Julie ShieldsJulie Shields, director of Millikin University's Center for Entrepreneurship, recently weighed in on what the Center for Entrepreneurship does to support community entrepreneurs.

In an article from the Herald & Review, Shields says the Center for Entrepreneurship focuses on three broad endeavors: innovative teaching of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial mindset development for youth, and support for community entrepreneurship from startups to mid-level businesses.

Shields noted that simply starting a business can be relatively easy, but successfully growing and sustaining a business is the big challenge.

"Decisions at every level cause stress, and it is helpful for many to have a network of people to call for support and advice," Shields said. The Center for Entrepreneurship supports three organizations that contribute to the local entrepreneurial community: SCORE, the Micro Business Network, and the Millikin-Decatur Executive Association.

"While the Center supports these groups, the ideas, work and heavy lifting are done by the entrepreneurs and volunteers who so generously give their time to consult, mentor, serve on boards, attend meetings, provide guidance, dream, encourage and create the entrepreneurial fabric in Decatur and Macon County," Shields said.
