Concert for Lent
Amy Catron, Cello
Tuesday, April 16, 7:30 pm, Central Christian Church, 650 W. William
Tickets: $10, MU students: Free with ID
A broad spectrum of music is presented in this concert during Holy Week. The expected meditative mood of the concert will be contrasted with strikingly aggressive sonorities including Mozart’s Laudate Pueri and Bach’s Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg which depicts the battle between life and death. Early American hymnody and African American spirituals broaden the aural palette even further.
Cellist Amy Catron is featured soloist both alone and with the University Choir. Ms. Catron plays Prelude and Sarabande from Bach’s Suite #1 and Rachmaninov’s Vocalise.
The centerpiece of the program is Svyati (O Holy One) by 21st C composer John Tavener. Here the Cello, simulating a chanting priest, is accompanied by the choir singing in liturgical Slavonic a text used in almost every Russian Orthodox service.
