Position Title:  Costume Shop Supervisor  

Department:  Theatre & Dance     

FLSA Category:  Exempt                        


Working Relationships:

Reports to:  Costume Director

Works Closely with:  Theatre & Dance Staff, Students

Directly Supervises:  Students


Job Summary:  The Costume Shop Supervisor works on six large-scale productions each season and must be able to instruct and supervise students efficiently and pleasantly within a fast-paced schedule.

Primary Responsibilities:


1.       Instructing students in industry standard techniques of costume construction


2.       Training and supervising students in the use of time, tools and materials.


3.       Overseeing students in the construction of costumes as directed by the Costume Director, including pattern drafting


4.       Designing costumes and special projects for productions as needed


5.       Assisting students in related areas such as dye, crafts, and hair and makeup


6.       Managing outside rentals and training and supervising the student rental coordinator.


Other Duties:


1.       Maintaining machinery and tools, and training students in their safe usage


2.       Maintaining costume storage


3.       Maintaining and improving costume studio, storage and related spaces as necessary


4.       Teaching in the curriculum as needed (depending upon qualifications)


5.       Design opportunities may be available (depending upon qualifications)


Minimum Position Qualifications:

BA/BFA in Theatre, Fine Arts or related field; MFA preferred
Two years supervisory experience/professional costume experience
Theatrical training
Strong stitching/sewing skills
Proficient draping and pattern drafting skills
Experience in theatrical costume construction
Supervisory skills
Strong communication skills
Exceptional time management and organizational skills
Experience with hair, crafts, or dyeing   


Work Environment:


Manual Dexterity: 

Dexterity to operate a keyboard and costume shop equipment

Physical Effort: 

Frequently lifting 25 lbs. or more
Typically standing or walking
Frequently bending, crouching or stooping
Using tools requiring high dexterity
Hearing and visual acuity within normal range.

Working Conditions:

Exposure to moving machinery or equipment
Exposure to chemicals
Requires protective devices
Alternative or flexible work schedules, which may require weekends


Hazards: Chemicals, fire, power tools
