The need for registered nurses is on the rise. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 19 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all other occupations.

Dr. Mary Jane Linton, Millikin University professor of nursing, says, "It takes a special person to be a nurse; it's not a job, it's a profession."

An increased emphasis on preventative care, growing rates of chronic conditions such as diabetes and obesity, the demand for health care services from the baby boomer population and the increase of those covered by the Affordable Care Act are driving the growth.

Dr. Linton earned certification as a Certified Nurse Educator and Clinical Nurse Leader, and was honored by Millikin University with the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award in 2009.
