Millikin students' research focuses on fight against cancer

Students under the guidance of Dr. Jennifer Schroeder, associate professor of biology at Millikin University, have spent the past semester researching the potential benefits of different cancer treatments.

Many undergraduates at Millikin University have opportunities to engage in various research projects each academic year. Through research studies, Millikin students gain Performance Learning skills that are necessary for post-graduate work.

Inside the labs of the Leighty-Tabor Science Center, three Millikin students are working on breast cancer cell research this fall in collaboration with Dr. Jennifer Schroeder, Millikin associate professor of biology.

Natalie Mendez, a senior international business and marketing major at Millikin University, is currently an Institute for Science Entrepreneurship Undergraduate Fellow.

As part of her fellowship, Mendez is working with Dr. David Horn, Millikin professor of biology, to help coordinate the Institute's Science Entrepreneurship Speaker Series. She is also leading efforts to implement social media strategies to increase awareness of the Institute and promote its events.

Millikin Performance Learning: Emily Vana '16

Millikin University graduate Emily Vana '16, from Elmhurst, Ill., will be attending graduate school this fall at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she will be pursuing a master's degree in biology.

Vana was a member of the Millikin Swimming team for all four years and was team captain for two seasons. Vana says she learned time management and developed her communication skills while being a part of the program.

Biology students win prestigious research awards

Students and alumni from Millikin University's Biology Department received various accolades at the biennial Tri-Beta National Convention held this year at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn., from June 2-4.
