About Us
At Millikin University, the Department of Exercise Science and Sport (ESS) students have a unique opportunity for undergraduate majors. The final examination of the Principles of Strength and Conditioning course (ES418) is the National Council on Strength and Fitness personal training certification exam. Upon successfully passing the exam, students become nationally accredited certified personal trainers. This provides much opportunity and opens up more doors for additional career paths for students. It also enables them to pursue jobs in the field earlier than students at other Universities.

Millikin University's BOD POD® Assessment
What are the benefits of the BOD POD®?
Did you know that body composition is one of the best indicators of overall health? The BOD POD® is one of the most accurate tests for assessing body fat and lean body mass (i.e., muscle, bones, and organs). The feedback that you receive from the BOD POD® can be used to measure your current health and where you want to be in the future.
How long does an assessment take?
The overall assessment will take approximately 10-15 minutes. The first 2-3 minutes will be imputing demographic data relating to the client, such as name, height, and date of birth. You will then be sitting in the BOD POD® for 3 minutes. Reviewing the results and goal planning will take however long needed.
How accurate is it?
The BOD POD® is a test that uses air displacement technology to determine body composition. It is as accurate as hydrostatic (underwater) weighing, but quicker and easier. The range of error for this test is ± 1 to 2.7%.
Follow these simple instructions for an accurate reading:
- No food, drink, or exercise for at least 3 hrs before testing.
- Remove glasses and jewelry.
- Wear minimal form fitting clothing:
- Men- spandex shorts or swim trunks
- Women- spandex type swimsuit or bike shorts and sports bra (no wire and padding)
- A swim cap to cover your hair will be provided.
How much does it cost?
- Millikin Community (faculty, staff, students and alum)- $40 per session or package deal $75 for 2 sessions
- Outside Community- $50 per session or package deal $90 for 2 sessions

Personal Fitness Assessment
Whether your goal is to perform better or to lose weight, we offer testing and screening options which can provide you with valuable information about your body and help identify barriers which could impede your progress. The Personal Fitness Assessment (PFA) serves two basic purposes. It allows our trainers to objectively evaluate your present level of physical fitness, which is helpful in assessing your needs, setting goals, and developing your Personal Workout Plan. It also helps you to monitor your progress and make any necessary modifications to achieve your fitness goals.
The PFA evaluates the five major components of physical fitness, including:
- Muscular strength
- Muscular endurance
- Cardiorespiratory endurance
- Body composition (Measured in our BOD POD®.)
- Flexibility
After your PFA, our trainers will sit down with you and go over your results. We will also take that information and discuss options to get you to your goals!
