Memorial for Carl S.  “Casey” Yates ’37

Carl S. "Casey" Yates , 93, of Litchfield, formerly of Divernon, died Thursday, March 27, 2008, at his home.

He was born June 15, 1914, in Divernon, the son of Charles and Bessie Sanders Yates . He married Clementine Seppi on Nov. 29, 1946, and she preceded him in death July 29, 1994. Also a son-in-law, Paul Ashmore, on July 7, 2007, preceded him in death.

Mr. Yates served in the U. S . Marine Corps during World War II as a platoon sergeant and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific theater ribbon with five stars.

Mr. Yates retired from Allis-Chalmers with 30 years of service. He was appointed acting postmaster in Divernon on Dec. 28, 1958. During this time he had the present post office built. Mr. Yates was township supervisor for 37 years and a member of the Sangamon County board of supervisors for several years. He was a life member of the Divernon Sportsman Club, a member of American Legion Post 278 and a member of Litchfield Moose Lodge 1634.

He is survived by a daughter, Carla Ashmore; a grandson, Tony Ashmore, wife Amy and their two children, Zoe and Ellie; a granddaughter, Angela Boden, husband Mike and their three children, Devin, Carly and Jenni Sue; a brother, Harold (wife Donna) Yates of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews.
