Memorial of William Arthur Wait ’38
William Arthur Wait of Seal Beach, CA, died on November 30 in his home. He was 98 years old.
William, the youngest of four children, was born in 1915 in Decatur, Illinois, to Flora and Arthur Wait. He was preceded in death by sisters Erma Cook and Margaret Parenti and brother Frank Wait. In his youth, Bill traveled widely by rail and by ship throughout the United States, to Europe, Africa, Asia, the South Pacific and around the world in the company of his family, taking an estimated 31 voyages in his lifetime. While later taking his own family on numerous trips, he passed along his love of travel to his children. He also maintained contact with numerous family members throughout the country, and collected detailed records of his family's history.
William married Mary Kathryn Keller of Ste. Marie, IL, in 1944. He owned and operated Wait's Arts Supply and Framing in downtown Decatur for 40 years. Bill was active in the Decatur arts community for many years. Bill and Katy moved to Leisure World in Seal Beach, CA, in 1998.
William is survived by his wife, Katy; daughter Pamela, her husband Don of Seattle; son Douglas, his wife Sharon of Chapel Hill, NC; daughter Martha, her husband Les of Huntington Beach, CA; daughter Carolyn, her husband Bob of North Brookfield, MA; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Through his words and actions, William left no doubt that his wife and children were the most important possessions of his life.
Do not be sad that he has gone, but be happy that he was here.
