ST. CHARLES - Leo Vitali, age 87, passed away peacefully with family at his side on July 11, 2017 at Central DuPage Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Betty, and five children who were raised in St. Charles: Mark (Kary) Vitali, Sandy (David) Wagner, Lynn Vitali, Lori (Andy) Seddon and Lisa (Robert) Small. His is also survived by his two sisters, Rose Sorensen and Argie Schmiedeke, cousin Silvo Vitali and his 10 grandchildren, Sarah (Brian Burkhart) Vitali, Stacy Vitali, Alex (Kristin) Wagner, John Wagner, Joe Vitali, David Small, Jessica Small, Kimberly Seddon, Michael Small and Hannah Seddon. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Elena Vitali. Leo was born on March 3, 1930 in Langleyville, IL, a small coal mining town, where he was raised and graduated from Taylorville High School (1950) participating in football, basketball and baseball which led to a football scholarship at Millikin University (1954). After marrying Betty Castelli from Langleyville in 1954, Leo began his high school teaching (history, PE and driver education) and coaching (football, golf, basketball and baseball) career in Illinois: Decatur St. Teresa High School (1954-1957), Mahomet-Seymour High School (1957-1965), 7 years head football coach, and St. Charles High School (1965-1991) 13 years head football coach, 9 years head golf coach. He was inducted into Illinois High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1983. Leo was known as a committed educator and coach who built programs based on sincerity, hard work and realistic goals. Visitation will be held 9:00 A.M. until the time of the service Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Moss-Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third St. (three blocks west of the Fox River, one block south of Route 64), St. Charles, IL. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 A.M. with prayers from the funeral home before proceeding to St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 6N491 Crane Rd., St. Charles, IL, to celebrate Mass at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Prairie Cemetery, Crane Road, St. Charles, IL, 60174.
