TyroltMemorial for Frank Tyrolt ’54

DECATUR -- Frank Tyrolt, age 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 16, 2018.

Frank was born the fourth of five children March 26, 1933 in Lyons, Illinois to Otto and Anna (Masilunas) Tyrolt. He graduated from Morton Community High School in 1950. After graduating in 1954 from Millikin University with a degree in Business Administration, Frank served in the Navy on the battleship Winsconsin. He married Jeanne Sansone in 1956. On finishing his time in the Navy, Frank worked for the Edward Hines Lumber Company and the Dietene Company. Frank returned to Decatur 1966 to become partner with the Beggs family in Dunn Company. In 1967 Frank acquired the remaining interest in the company. Bernie Naber joined Frank at Dunn Company that same year, and they operated the business as partners until Frank’s retirement in 1999. Frank and his beloved wife Shirley married in 1982.

Inspired by God’s direction to “come as you are,” Frank’s humility and humanity led him to accept others unconditionally. He especially gave that acceptance to his family, and lovingly taught, mentored, and shepherded them. With honesty and integrity, Frank looked to build relationships and partnerships. He was quick to offer an introduction, a solution, or an olive branch. His charm and wit earned him friends wherever he went. A believer that work is noble, Frank’s regard for his coworkers drove his desire to provide a living for generations of families. Frank enjoyed skiing, fishing, tennis, golf, travel, and reveling in God’s beauty in the outdoors with loved family and friends.

Frank’s deep faith, sense of community, and innate desire to help others led him to service and giving. Frank served on the governing bodies of organizations including Millikin University, St. Mary’s Hospital, The Associated General Contractors of Illinois, and Soy Capital Bank. He actively supported many other organizations and causes including Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, United Way, Ursula Beck Pro Tennis Classic, Oasis Day Center, St. Teresa High School, AGCI Education Foundation, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. While willing to help in public ways, he preferred having quiet, personal impact in the lives of individuals who needed a kind word or a hand up.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents, sister Marion Hedman, and brothers Robert and George Tyrolt. Frank’s legacy continues through his devoted wife Shirley; sister June Marbes (Ken); children Sue Montague, Nancy Tyrolt, Cathy Allen, Lois Boyd, James Tyrolt, Gail Mish (Vince), and David Tyrolt (Alissa); step-daughter Christine Basten (Robert); 13 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am, Saturday, August 25th, 2018, at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mt. Zion. The family will receive friends for a visitation from 9 am until the service on Saturday. Private entombment will be in the Star of Hope Mausoleum at Graceland Cemetery.

In lieu flowers, memorials may be made in Frank’s honor to St. Teresa High School, 2710 N. Water St., Decatur, IL 62526; and to the Associated General Contractors of Illinois Education Foundation, 3219 Executive Park Dr., Springfield, IL 62703.

Our family wishes to thank his caregivers and the staff at Hickory Point Christian Village. We are grateful for their loving care and compassion.
