Memorial for James Richard Smith ’73
James Richard Smith of Bloomington was born Dec. 7, 1946, in Decatur, and passed away Dec. 16, 2018, at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, after a long and fierce battle with leukemia. His dedicated and loving wife was holding his hand as he entered heaven.
Jim and Carol were married Jan. 11, 1969, after Jim served his country in the U.S. Army. He then graduated from Millikin University with a degree in industrial engineering. He retired from Bridgestone-Firestone after 39 years of service in May 2011. He was raised in the church and was a past member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Decatur. Jim will be most remembered for his devotion to his family and amazingly quick wit that endeared him to all who knew him.
Jim leaves behind his devoted wife, Carol, and loving, amazing and dedicated children, Jennifer Clark and Benjamin Smith (wife, Becky). He was very proud to be PaPa to Bailey, Margaret and Owen Clark, and Woodrow and Arbor Smith. He leaves behind his sister, Becky Frisby (husband, Frank); special brother-in-law Mike Brelsfoard (wife, Diane); and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Special thanks to nieces Karla Frisby and Jeanette (Duhamel) Johnson and cousin Brenda Barone for all their prayers, love and support. We would also like to thank the staff on the eighth tower oncology unit at Lutheran Advocate General Hospital. It was evident they truly cared and loved Jim throughout his illness. They became our family during the six months we were there and began to ask to be assigned to Jim's care, not only physically but emotionally as well.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Freida Smith; sister, Patricia Duhamel; niece, Krista Frisby; and special cousin, Richard Bennett.
His memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 2727 N. Union St., Decatur, with Pastor Brett Hinrichs officiating. Memorials can be made in Jim’s name to St. John's Lutheran Church, 2727 N. Union St., Decatur, IL 62526.
Arrangements entrusted to Chicagoland Cremation Options of Schiller Park.
