Memorial for LeRoy Poss ’51
DECATUR – LeRoy Matthew Poss, 91, a dedicated national defense professional, expert in his field, engaging writer and speaker, lifelong learner, devout Catholic, devoted husband, loving father, and avid golfer, died unexpectedly in his sleep in Oro Valley, AZ. Born in Ashton, IA, he graduated from Sibley High School and left the family farm in 1944 for World War II U.S. Army Air Force pilot training at Blackland Army Air Force Base, TX. Lee re-enlisted from 1945-48, and again from 1948-52 as a Sergeant in the 805th Signal Depot Co. While on leave from Chanute Field, IL, he met Decatur High School tennis star Mae Suhomske who he married in 1946. He studied at Millikin University and worked in Federal Civil Service at the Decatur Signal Depot until it closed in 1961. Lee also helped win the Cold War at what is now the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency at Ft. Huachuca, AZ from 1961-66, and in Los Angeles, CA from 1966-84, until 1986 Hughes Aircraft Co. retirement. He is survived by Mae, his wife of 71 years; sons Michael and Gregory who shared his love of flying, business, and summer road trips; granddaughters Felicia and Sophia; and brother Herbert and sister Doris. He will be laid to rest with Military Funeral Honors at 11:00 a.m., April 28, 2017, Davis Memorial Park, Las Vegas, NV.
