Memorial for Stephen William Milhollin ’68
Milhollin, Stephen William
Aug 29, 1946 - Aug 7, 2017
Stephen William Milhollin, who had a long and successful career as a teacher in the Carter Lake School District, died in Omaha, NE, on August 7, 2017 at the age of 70 years old. Mr. Milhollin was born on August 29, 1946 in Indianapolis, IN, to Millard Herschel Milhollin, a foundry executive, and Cenith Thomas, a realtor. His family moved to Albany, IN, in 1947 where he lived until 1955. Following two more family moves he graduated from Eisenhower H.S. and Millikin University in Decatur, IL. Before beginning his career as a teacher in Carter Lake, Mr. Milhollin served as a volunteer teacher on the Pine Ridge Oglala Lakota (Sioux) reservation in South Dakota. After his move to Carter Lake, he earned a Master of Science Degree at the University of Omaha, Nebraska. As an educator, he especially loved teaching his students the game of chess as an extracurricular activity to engage them in the enjoyment of strategizing, an appreciation of problem-solving skills, and discovering/learning and performing abilities within themselves that formal curricula may not reveal or validate. He is survived by his brother, Gary Milhollin, of Chevy Chase, MD; and his sister, Rita Milhollin, of Sammamish, WA; as well as two nephews, three nieces and 13 great-nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly.
