Memorial for Mark “Mert” Edward Meurlot ’78
DECATUR -- Our Heavenly Father called Mark Edward Meurlot home on December 20, 2018 from Loyola Hospital in Chicago where his son, Christopher Meurlot, father, Karl Meurlot, and longtime companion, Dawn Strohl, were at his side. Mark was 62 years of age having been born in Decatur, Illinois on October 28, 1956.
Mark, also called "Marky Mark" or "Mert" was known for his outgoing personality, great smile and infectious laugh. He was very proud of his son, Christopher, loved his family and friends and always "had their back." Mark enjoyed his furry kids and being with family and friends where he was known for his kind words, big hugs and huge heart.
"Mert" was a graduate of MacArthur High School, where he excelled in sports, and Millikin University where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his buddies but his passion was his volunteer work for the Decatur Police Department Auxiliary where he served with pride for 33 years. Mark was promoted through the ranks to Captain where he was responsible for scheduling the work of the auxiliary members and planning their activities. He worked tirelessly at events and community activities, often seen directing traffic at the corner of Main and North streets in front of his family business, or driving the lead car at processionals and parades.
Surviving Mark are his son Christopher Meurlot (wife, Danielle), grandson Cullen Meurlot, mother Barbara Meurlot, father Karl Meurlot, sister Cindy Deadrick-Wolfer (husband, Mark Wolfer), brother Kilt Meurlot, and Dawn Strohl, his sweetheart for almost 30 years. Mark's grandparents, several aunts and uncles preceded him in death.
A "Celebration of Life" will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 6, 2019. The family invites friends and all family members to join them following the service in the fellowship hall to share memories and light refreshments.
Memorials may be sent to the Decatur Police Department Auxiliary Fund in care of Jason Walker, 707 South Side Drive, Decatur, Illinois 62521.
