Memorial for Samantha Markum ’16
PEKIN - Samantha Marie Markum, 24, of Pekin passed away at 10:45 a.m. Friday, July 14, 2017, in Peoria.
She was born on June 15, 1993, in Peoria to James R. and Angela (Sellers) Markum.
Surviving are her parents, Jim and Angie Markum of Pekin; two brothers, Britt Markum of Peoria and Blake Markum of Pekin; one niece, Aliza; her grandparents, Sally Markum of Pekin and Arthur Sellers Sr. of East Peoria; and her aunts and uncles, Melody (Kevin) Krigbaum of Pekin, Arthur (Joann) Sellers Jr. of East Peoria, Joanie Humphreys of Marquette Heights, Jerry Sellers of East Peoria and Sandy (Brad) Wheeler of Creve Coeur.
She was preceded in death by a grandfather, James R. Markum Sr.; a grandmother, Marie Sellers; and one aunt, Sherry Sellers.
Samantha was an avid reader, loved children and enjoyed watching movies, beach vacations and going to Disney World. Music was a passion in her life and she loved playing in her dad's band, The Jim Markum Swing Band. She was a very talented musician and played the clarinet, saxophone and the piano.
Samantha also danced for 15 years.
She was a 2011 graduate of Pekin Community High School, where she was a member of the Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble and Noteables. She was also a member of the National Honor Society at PCHS. Samantha then graduated from Millikin University in Decatur in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education. While at Millikin, she participated in the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble.
Samantha was a teacher for Peoria Public School District 150 at Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center.
She was a member of Rivers Edge United Methodist Church in Spring Bay.
Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 20, 2017, at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Tazewell Animal Protective Society, 100 Taps Lane, Pekin, IL 61554. Samantha volunteered at Taps during high school and loved her pets.
