Memorial for Marvin Klaven

Marvin Klaven, long-time resident of Decatur, Illinois, passed away quietly on August 8, 2018 Costa Mesa, California. Marvin was born in St. Louis Missouri on April 8, 1931 and spent most of his life in the Midwest. While attending University City High school in Saint Louis, Marvin met Beverly Simon and they were married in 1951. After serving in the Air National Guard, Marvin enrolled in the School of Art at the University of Iowa where he earned his B.A. and M.F.A. in Studio Arts.

In 1963 Marv accepted a position in the Art Department at Millikin University in Decatur. It was here, in Decatur, Marv and Bev would live for over 50 years, raising 4 children, and participating in a vibrant social life where they made their mark on the community.

Marv was a impassioned teacher and faculty member, nurturing his students talents in painting, printmaking, and sculpting. His love of teaching earned him recognition and numerous prestigious awards for teaching excellence and campus leadership. When he retired in 1997 a scholarship fund was established at Millikin in his name. A talented painter and printmaker in his own right, Marv was a prolific artist and won numerous awards for his work. Much of his work celebrated landscapes of the Midwest.

After retirement Marv and Bev enjoyed many years of international travel visiting England, France, Italy, Spain, Russia, Egypt, Africa, Israel, China, and India. Between trips abroad they spent time visiting their children, grandchildren, family members, and friends. Marv lived a full, vibrant, and creative life and will be missed by those who knew and loved him.

Marvin will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Beverly Klaven, his children Steve (Merija), Jeff (Janet), Kerrie (Joe) and Marcy (Jerry) and his grandchildren Rachel, Asher, Damien, Lauren, Katie, Lindsay, Mathew, Sara, Jamie, Jared, and his many friends and former students.
