Eleanor Ann (Schudel) Helfrich, age 98, of Monticello passed away peacefully at 7:38 a.m. Friday (Feb. 17, 2017) at Kirby Hospital, Monticello.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, at St. Philomena's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Bruce Lopez officiating. Eleanor requested no public visitation. Private family viewing will be one hour ahead of service. Interment will be at the Hammond Township Cemetery in Hammond.

Eleanor was born on Sept. 26, 1918, in Decatur, Ill., to John Frederick and Eleanor A. (Steele) Schudel. She graduated from Millikin University in 1940 with a degree in art. She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority while at the university.

Eleanor married James Clark Helfrich of Hammond on Aug. 22, 1940, in Decatur.

Eleanor and James had six children, James Frederick (Marian) of Texas, Thomas Howard of Wisconsin, Sally Ann Boe of Montana, Mary Kay (Mike) Randall of Monticello, Stephen John of Arkansas and Richard Alan of Hammond; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one niece and nine nephews.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James; son, Thomas Howard; sister, Justine Slouf; and brother, Frederick Schudel.

Eleanor was a member of the Monticello Women's Club and St. Philomena's Catholic Church.

She was a homemaker her entire life and raised six children with love and affection. In her spare time between raising children, Eleanor enjoyed painting and drawing throughout her years.

Memorials may be made to St. Philomena's Catholic Church, Maple Point Assisted Living or Kirby Hospital, all of Monticello.
